What a pass proves
- The events are in the order they were appended, and none has been edited, inserted, removed, or reordered since. Each event's hash covers the previous event's hash, so a single altered character stops every hash after it from deriving.
- The events covered by a timestamp token already existed, in this order, at the instant that authority issued it. The authority is an independent party with no stake in the dispute, and it countersigned the chain head rather than any claim we made about it.
What it does not prove
- That the events describe something true. A hash commits to what was written down. It has nothing to say about whether what was written down was accurate, and any page telling you otherwise is selling something.
- That the log is complete. It proves nothing was changed after the fact; it cannot prove an event was written in the first place.
- Anything about rows written before a chain seal. Those are retained and counted separately, never folded into the verified total.
